Alone Together
The Art of the Duo
On the 14th of April, Henning Gailing and myself have made Duo recordings on double bass and trumpet. The outcome of that fantastic day is to be found on this page.
Along with videos of the different tracks, you'll find some learn videos were you can learn about what exactly happens when a bass and a trumpet play together.
Alone Together
In the past year we have experienced together how important it is to be able to improvise. Life shows us quite clearly that not everything always works out the way you imagined it at the beginning. However, this way of dealing with ever-changing conditions is a main component of a great art form: jazz. By studying it, we learn not only to make beautiful music, but also to develop a more flexible attitude towards change.
Studying improvised music is not easy for beginning musicians, however, because it takes time and practice to get accustomed to the variable parameters involved. It also takes individual lessons with proper teachers, which can be expensive and is hard to realise during a lockdown.
At the same time, we have been dealing with a barrier between improvised music and the general public for years. This is mainly because the complex way a particular piece is interpreted can be difficult for an untrained listener to understand. Now, we do not intend to introduce the global community to jazz music with a corresponding idiom, but we would like to offer beginning improvisers practical information about various Themes that are involved in improvising.
